English Teacher - High School

MY WHY
Having taught at a large main stream high school, a small(ish) alternative high school, and a university, I learned to appreciate smaller schools. I enjoy the sense of unity among staff and students alike. I came to Cascade for the mountains and cooler weather and have chosen to stay for the kids. We have quite a bit of young brilliance here at Cascade High School and I delight in doing my part to help it bloom.
MY BACKGROUND
I graduated from the University of Idaho in 2012 with a BA in creative writing and a BS in secondary education. Since that time, I opted to include an associates degree in massage therapy and a masters in composition and rhetoric from Idaho State University to the collection of degrees. As a graduate student teaching English 101 at ISU, I honed my skills in art of teaching writing, specifically how to make lofty rhetorical theory accessible to fledgling writers. For six years following my college graduation, I taught summer school at Magic Valley High School and work as either a substitute teacher or paraprofessional there while between college degrees. During my time at Magic Valley, I developed a strong passion for working with at risk youth. This is what drove my studies pursuing my masters degree. My goal is to create methods to make writing and rhetorical theory accessible to students of all backgrounds. Whether my students take the college route or go straight to the workforce, I strive to help them develop the writing skills they need to be successful no matter the path they choose.
MY INTERESTS
I was born and raised in Twin Falls, Idaho, but spent much of summer and winter breaks in the Yellowstone area. While I'm proud of my experiences on the family farm in Twin Falls, I am very much a mountain girl at heart, with snowmobiling as the favorite family winter pass-time. When I'm not teaching, I'm doting on my St. Bernard, Appa, and training him for a future as a therapy dog. One perk of teaching is the time it allows for travel and new experiences. Many miles are put on my trusty Subaru, Buffy the Mountain Slayer, as my pup and I traverse the country, visiting friends and family. My life goal is to visit all of the places my grandfather lived growing up - Labrador, Canada, Puerto Rico, Saint Croix, and Malmesbury, England - before coming to the United States.
