In Idaho, Open Enrollment is a law that lets students attend public schools outside their assigned district if there is space available. This means students can apply to attend a school in another district if they believe it better meets their needs or if they want to join programs not offered in their home district. Schools do not have to accept every applicant but are required to consider applications fairly and based on available space.
The law helps families have more choices in public education, but districts set specific rules to manage applications. For example, students may need to apply by a certain date, follow school behavior policies, and provide their own transportation. Idaho’s State Department of Education oversees open enrollment, making sure that districts follow the law fairly and transparently.
